The DMV (or Hell and Back)

The California DMV is a lovely place, full of red licorice, candy canes, and soda pop.  Oh wait, I’m thinking of Big Rock Candy Mountain.  In actuality, the California DMV is a wretched hive of scum and villainy.  No, wait, thats the Mos Eisley Cantina.  I guess maybe the California DMV is somewhere in between Big Rock Candy Mountain and the Mos Eisly Cantina, probably closer to the latter.  In fact, aside from the lack of a doorside Droid Scanner, the California DMV pretty much is the Cantina.  In order to get something you want, you must wait patiently in line next to bizarre sweaty creatures that constantly threaten and eye you.  Fortunately for me I always keep my Lightsaber by my side, and I was able to leave that place with a new driver’s license, new license plates, vehicle registration, and transport to Alderaan.

As such, it will be necessary for me to rename my vehicle.  I always go by the license plate, altered to sound like some strange word.  The weighty-eight beagle (W88-BGL) will henceforth be known as Fiven Kaymfor 78 (5NKM478).  It’s sad though, because weighty-eight beagle really had a nice ring to it.  I’ll have to spend some time getting used to Fiven Kaymfor.  It’s awkward, but it has some potential.

I am almost completely moved in, except for one box and some minor organizational stuff.  I need to find some art for my walls as well.  Nothing worse than bare walls.  At some point I will also need to purchase a small dining room table and chairs, and porbably a patio table with chairs as well.  I will have pics up here at some point of my newly-furnished apartment.

Google Foo

I caught a little bit of MTV2 the other day and saw a song I liked.  However, the only things I knew about the song were:

  • It involved piano
  • A Russian girl in New York City wrote/sang
  • Just signed to a major label

I finally turned to Google and the following search provided my answers within the first hit:

russia "new york city" "major label debut" album 2005 piano

The song ‘Us’ on the album ‘Soviet Kitsch’, sung by Regina Spektor, is really cool.  Its weird, but I like it.  I grow stronger with my Google Foo every day.

In other news, I got my cable/internet today.  It took only 3 hours for 3 cable guys to reroute all cable going into my place through the walls, through the crawl space, across the driveway, up to the phone poll.  In other words, I have extremely fast and high quality internet and cable.  Just about everything that could have gone wrong did, which is why I ended up with brand new everything.  Also, Adelphia’s DVR is top of the line. It puts Time Warner’s to shame, and make’s Tivo look like Apollo Creed.

Funny story.  I got the name Apollo Creed by googling for "rocky opponents".  You’d think I would know these things off the top of my head, but sometimes they escape me.  The funny part?  Check out the second result.  C-po in the hizouse

Bus to the Stash

I visited Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash in Westwood on Sunday.  It was a pretty cool comic shop, with lots of goodies and original art and props.  You can see the pictures in my flickr gallery.

In a completely shocking turn of events, I took the bus.  There and back.  Thats about 5 miles of bus riding in LA.  For me, a young moderately well-off man who went to private schools all his life, going for a ride on the bus is like Martha Stewart going to jail.  Needless to say I found my way there and back alright, but once my car gets here the bus will most likely become a thing of the past.

In other news, my stuff has arrived.  This means that I will be spending my first night in my apartment this evening.  I am nervous.  I’ve got my bed set up, bathroom, shower curtain, etc.  As far as I know, those are the only things I will need.  TV and Internet will arrive tomorrow, which will definitely help things along.  I’ll post more pictures tomorrow of my new apartment.

Last night was pretty unventful.  I went to a Martini bar with a friend and just chilled.  On my walk back at 1:30am, I snapped a couple of photos.  This is the Lamborghini dealership right next to the hotel.  Just to the right of these are a couple of Maseratis that are just as cool.

The Gaylord Banquet Room

When I told C-Po I was moving out to BH the first thing he said to me was: "You’ve got to check out my favorite place, The Gaylord Banquet Room.  You’ll have a ball!"

Zing.

This is a nice shot I took today while walking from my hotel to the office.  I’m posting this from Flickr to see if it really works.
