Gallas as Captain – A Great Decision

I think making Billy Gallas captain of The Arsenal is a great idea. Call me crazy, go on if you must, but I think this is another change in a positive direction. It’s a departure from what we are used to and that’s why I think it will be good.

Gilberto is a great player but he is no captain. I haven’t seen him yell, motivate, or push the team while on the pitch. Gallas however has regularly spoken out against the club. I think it’s poor form that he has spoken out against the youth and inexperience, but it shows that he cares and he wants to make things better. Outspoken people are often great leaders and passionate about what they want. Coupled with the fact that he is a strong central defender and I think that he will lead the team to success.

It’s further proof that this Arsenal team isn’t anything we’re used to. With TH14 and Freddie out, it’s now more about the team coming together than ever. Youth be damned, this one is going to be a team effort.
The biggest key to the season ahead though is not Gallas by any means. It is without a doubt… Robin Van Persie. He must stay fit and he must score goals. It would be nice if they were all magic like his last two in the pre-season. Come on Arsenal!

  1. Finally a blog that talks sense, a true fan that can see the big picture.

Gallas will really show his ability to excel as captain, when time are tough at the likes of Bolton and Blackburn, where we should show respect for the power of their play and earn the right to play first!!!!

  2. agreed mate. yes he has been a bit of a prat in his first season, BUT this will inspire him to play how we all know he can and that is the best thing for arsenal.

  3. Spot on. I agree 100%.

Arsenal fans have been moaning about Captain Henry being pally with opponents in the tunnel before games. Now we have a captain who is spikey, aggressive and will not tolerate the slackness that we saw so often last year.

    About time too !!

I am expecting a much sharper, more focused team effort this year and I think Gallas will make a big contribution to that.

  4. all gallas has to do is show the Arsenal supporters his commitment to Arsenal and win the fans over. On and off the pitch. he’ll be a decent captain and hope he can use his authority on the pitch and give eboue a good smack every time he make his diving anthic

  5. I think Gallas is the right choice for Captain (although I hope it doesn’t upset Gilberto who supposedly has Juve sniffing around him). My only concern is his commitment to Arsenal – he has never showed any intention of staying Arsenal for the rest of his career. He is a very competitive player who will fight to win but I feel he is trying to win for his own sake not for the team. I am not necessarily saying that is a bad thing. But maybe if things aren’t going to plan come January we might be see his moaning return and wanting to leave. This would be disasterous during that time of the season. With Gilberto I have always felt he is 100% Arsenal, Gallas however …. let’s say the only team he really cares about is “Team Gallas”. It is a risky move making him captian but after the last few seasons I think it is a risk work taking.

  6. Typical Wenger. Very clever indeed. Hes done the british army trick, take the trouble mouthy one whit the big ego who rebels against the establishment and give them authority, give them a stake in the bigger picture, turn them INTO the establishment. Thus transforming all that negativity into positivity. I mean now Gallas IS Arsenal, (and knowing how much he loves himself) he’s not going to play up anymore is he?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the finest Manager in the game……. Arsene Wenger. genius.

  7. Gallas doesn’t own you anything. He doesn’t have to show you anything either. He ’s been named the club captain; if you don’t like it, go and ask AW why he did.
You must get off Gallas’s back now and let him focus on the job in hand.
I think naming Gallas as the Captain was a right decision with regard to cirumstances. Gallas is a natural leader and this is the type of lead Arsenal need right now, not a caring “father”. Thank you.

  8. Very well ut in that last blog

  9. We shall see, I guess. I hated the idea right off the bat, but I think he deserves a chance to prove himself. I just hope it doesn’t make Gilberto resent the club or Arsene in any way, because I like Gilberto a lot more than I like Gallas and want to see him around for a long time.

  10. Nice to see you back.

Will, if you can, would a Cesc wallpaper be possible?? In the style of the RVP and TH ones from last year.

  11. Who thinks Alex Song would make a great captain? Definitely me!
